Self Portrait

Self Portrait 2011

This is an edited version of my first year project piece. Moderated for my modesty. It is yet to be printed and displayed but I happy with the connotations and I am happy with the direction it puts me in as I develop.

  1. This quite intentionally is my most personal piece to date, I enjoy the intensity of self portraiture as it entitles a lot of authority and sentiment simultaneously. I strongly wanted to use myself, much like the way other strong female artists use their bodies and wit for empowerment, sexual declaration & examination.

    The surface:
This version does not best portray my intentions so in words I should explain my attempt of capsuling. Much in the way a digital camera only captures a capped level of realism and sensation I thought to capsule myself (in process and in content) by portraying myself sincerely and fraudulently. Red Sky: The sincerity of my body and gesture, unclothed yet skewly portrayed against the fraud of self ornamenting.

I wanted a highly colour operated visual to manufacture a concentrated sense of personal idealism and interpretation. Thus as you’d expect, the colours signify different ideals and entrapments.

I see it as say a hyper neorealist product, or perhaps a surreal realism – these statements makes the piece rather dutied but it was my intention to create an immortal structure of the animated and the reality in hybrid. I could go on about this for pages but I won’t here, right now it’s equally important to have a multi-interpretation (particular because it is after all about exploration, identity, sexuality etc).

PS. Use of incorrect words like 'dutied' 'skewly' & 'capsuling' were intentional!
